PA Work Comp Statistics for Work Related Injuries

The most recent statistics (2002) from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor reported the following work injury and illness statistics:

  • There were 95,206 lost-time work injury and illness cases reported to the Bureau of Workers Compensation.
  • There was a 5.3% increase in lost-time work injury and illnesses over 2001 (95,206 vs. 90,405).
  • Fatalities increased from 134 in 2001 to 146.
  • Workers between the ages of 40-44 had the highest rate of work injury or illness - 13.6% or 12,939 reported cases.
  • Workers between the ages of 35-39 had the second highest rate of work injury or illness - 13.2% or 12,563 reported cases.
  • The median age for an injured worker was 39.5.
  • Of all reported work injury or illness cases, 66.3% or 63,104 were male.
  • Of all reported work fatalities, 12 were female.
  • Manufacturing, Services, and Retail accounted for over 58% of lost-time work injury and illness cases.
  • Mining had the highest injury and illness rate of all major industries.
  • Sprains and strains accounted for 44% of all reported cases.
  • Contusions, crushes, and bruises accounted for 13.2% of all reported cases.
  • Injuries to the arms, wrists, hands, fingers, and shoulders accounted for over 30% of all reported cases.
  • Back injuries alone accounted for over 20% of all reported cases.
  • Overexertion (lifting, pulling, pushing) accounted for 34% of all reported cases making it the leading cause of injury in 2002.
  • Most injuries where a time of injury could be determined happened during the first hour of work.
  • Of all reported cases, over 50% came from 9 out of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania.
  • In order from highest to lowest, the 9 counties are: Philadelphia, Allegheny, Lancaster, Montgomery, Bucks, Delaware, Berks, Westmoreland, and Lehigh.
