Bailiff. Court officer responsible for keeping order in the court, custody of the jury, and custody of prisoners while in court.

Benefits. Workers compensation benefits include loss of earnings benefits for total disability or partial disability , specific loss benefits, death benefits , medical benefits , and illegally employed minor's benefits.

Benefit payments. Generally, money paid for some work-related loss, such as a disability or death. The money is paid on what is known as a "schedule of payments" basis, which is roughly a percentage of the injured workers " average weekly wage " for a period or periods fixed in statutory schedules.

Binding authority. Law that controls the outcome of a case. For example, a decision on the same point of law by a higher court in the same state must be followed by a lower court in that state. See precedent .

Brief . Written document, usually prepared by an attorney, submitted to the court about a case, containing summaries of the facts of the case, relevant laws, and an argument showing how the laws support that party's position.

Bureau of Workers Compensation. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry exercises most of its administrative functions and processes all workers compensation claims through this Bureau, which is located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Burden of proof or standard of proof. Degree of proof required in a specific kind of case to prevail. In workers compensation cases, there are several burdens of proof depending on the stage of the case. Generally, an injured worker has the burden of proving his or her claim petition and the employer has the burden of proving all petitions it files.
