Witness . A person who testifies under oath as to what he has seen or heard.

Workers compensation . Generally, those laws designed to provide benefits to workers who are injured on the job or who contract a work-related illness. Benefits provided by workers compensation include cash payments to replace a portion of lost wages for time spent away from work, payments for medical care associated with work-related injuries and illnesses, and benefits for specific losses that are permanent. In the case of a fatal injury, workers compensation provides the worker's dependents with survivor benefits.

Workers Compensation Appeal Board (Pennsylvania). An 10-member administrative board that exercises is powers and duties as an appeal board which reviews the legal decisions of workers compensation judges. The board acts independently of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

Workmens' or Workers Compensation Act (Pennsylvania). The group of statutes that apply to all work-related injuries that occur in Pennsylvania, regardless of where the contract of hiring was made.

Workers compensation judge . These judges are appointed by and are representatives of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. They conduct hearings in an administrative proceeding for workers compensation cases. Workers compensation judges must be attorneys, have five years' experience in workers compensation or a similar practice; must complete certain training; and must abide by a code of ethics.

Writ . Broadly, a court order requiring the performance of some act or giving authority to have the act done.
